Among the snowy forest, three creatures ran and jumped around playfully. A grayish-brown one with a tiny purple bow on her head, and her slightly taller, pale spotted sister. Watching them was a larger, medium blue one, missing a foreleg. Despite holding a relatively authoritative figure, the blue mivool would jump in to join the fun now and then. Playfully bounding through the high snow, jumping and tumbling, they were unaware that they were being watched.

A dark, striped animal laid in a tree, as if waiting, watching the little adopted family. It was smaller than even the sappy mivool; but stalked them like a predator nonetheless, its red eyes staring expressionlessly.
As the blue one led his little sisters onward, the shadow jumped through the tall, evergreen trees silently. Should it make a wrong move, a huge mass of snow piled on the branches could topple over him, more than giving away his presence.
Suddenly, a glimmer caught his eye. Stowed away under a low-set tree were two colorful boxes, topped with glittery artifacts. What could those be, the shadow wondered, What are they for?
The mivools approached a huge tree, staring up at it happily.
Why are they so happy at the tree? The red eyes squinted through the branches. Is there prey in there?
The blue mivool scrambled up the tree, struggling with his stub of a foreleg. Higher and higher he climbed, nearly falling many times. He was almost at the tip when he stopped and found a comfortable spot in the branches. He gnawed at the thin, weak wood of the tip, until eventually it broke off. He tossed it down to the ground, where the two younger mivools ran up to it and investigated it excitedly.
He barked something back to them; the creature couldn't understand what he was saying. The mivool kits backed away, and to his surprise, the blue one jumped from the high-up tree, plummeting into the snow. He scrambled out clumsily, laughing with the two kits.
The blue mivool then glanced towards the base of another tree; the one with the boxes under it. He whispered something to the two kits and they turned around, eyes closed. He nudged the two boxes towards the two kits, then they turned around. They bounced excitedly, running up to the boxes.
Did he make that for them? That's sweet... the observer thought.
Then, the two sisters tore at the outside, wrecking the delicate wrapping. They're destroying them!
Yet the three-legged mivool just sat there, smiling. His long tail rattled slightly in anticipation.
The spotted red kit pulled out a strip of yarn, sloppily knitted together into a scarf. She wrapped it around her neck, purring slightly with the warmth. The purple-topped one received four small booties, which she put on and jumped around in, her paws no longer numbingly cold from the snow. They also got a couple treats, a small box of cookies and tarts, which they devoured without hesitation.
The sisters looked at each other, then at a certain dirty spot in the snow. They ran over and dug, uncovering a third box badly wrapped and slightly damp. The blue mivool smiled at the surprise, and they pulled out a floppy cone-shaped hat with a little bell at the tip, shoving it onto his head too hard, covering his eyes. He stumbled around blindly for a moment before setting it straight, then nuzzled the red kit. The brown one smiled slightly, though was clearly a little jealous of her sister.
The kits followed their big brother as he buried the leftover wrappings and grabbed the tip of the tree he had broken off, smiling and trotting away, excited for wherever they were going.
The dark creature lost sight of them. He realized he was smiling. He didn't understand what they were doing, but he kind of wished he could join them in whatever was going on.
Maybe I'll see them through here another time, he wondered, as he jumped through the trees back to his den.
